Obituary: Kathleen M. Payovich

December 9, 1947 – April 10, 2024

Kathleen M. Payovich Kathleen M. Payovich, nee Sobczynski, age 76, of Dyer, IN, passed away peacefully Wednesday, April 10, 2024. Beloved and doting wife for 50 years to the late Gordon Payovich. Treasured and loving mother to Steve (Jennifer) Payovich and Kristen (David) Popiolek. Proud grandmother (Ga) of Robert, Reid, and Tyler. Kathleen was preceded in death by her parents Van Walter and Genevieve Sobczynski.

Kathy was known for her kind and giving nature. She had a love for baking, the Chicago Cubs, and spending time with her family and pets.

Baking was one of the ways Kathy expressed love to her friends and family. Sharing that love with her daughter on so many occasions. The two baked for many over the years and were often involved in neighborhood cookie exchanges. If they weren’t baking, they were crafting, ending up with an entire hand-painted Christmas village for all to enjoy.

Kathy was an avid Chicago Cubs fan, rarely missing a game, especially during the Kris Bryant years. She would always watch with her husband and text her son throughout. At times threatening her son that she would be switching to the White Sox if the Cubs were losing.

Kathy looked forward to spending time with her family and game nights were a big to-do in the Payovich household. She didn’t mind getting slapped with whipped cream playing the game Pie Face with her grandkids or having fun poked at her for listing a rhinoceros as a farm animal in Scattergories. As long as she was with her family, she was happy.

Dog rescue was another of Kathy’s passions. She would frequently search the adoption sites to see who else needed a good home. On one occasion she went as far as tricking her husband into bringing a fifth dog into the mix, although he didn’t need much convincing being a dog lover himself.

Kathy will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her memory will live on forever in the hearts of those she left behind. May she rest in peace.
