Things to do in Lansing this week – August 14 edition

LANSING, Ill. (August 13, 2023) – The items listed below are public events compiled from a variety of community sources. They represent a diversity of ways to be involved this week.


Monday, August 14

Brides through the Decades

Time: 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Location: Lansing Public Library, lower level, 2750 Indiana Avenue, Lansing

In its final week, Brides Through the Decades is a summer exhibit at the Lansing Historical Society Museum featuring photos and commentary about fashion trends and traditions through the eras.


Tuesday, August 15

Village of Lansing Board meeting

Time: 6 p.m.

Location: Police and Court Complex (Lansing Police Department), 2710 170th Street, Lansing

The regular Lansing Board of Trustees meeting starts at 6 p.m. during the summer months. The meetings typically occur on the first and third Tuesdays of the month. The Committee of the Whole meeting follows directly after. See the agenda here.

Thornton Township Board meeting

Time: 6 p.m.

Location: Thornton Township Headquarters, 333 E. 162nd Street, South Holland

The Thornton Township Board of Trustees meeting occurs at 6 p.m. During the summer, the meetings have been held on the third Tuesday of the month. The schedule returns to second and fourth Tuesdays in September.

Junior Gardeners

Time: 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Location: Lansing Public Library, Courtyard, 2750 Indiana Avenue, Lansing

Junior gardeners will learn fun garden facts and will get to grow their own library garden. Registration required.

Lansing Garden Club

Time: 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Location: Lansing Public Library, Community Room, 2750 Indiana Avenue, Lansing

The Lansing Garden Club meets on the third Tuesday of each month at the Lansing Library. Newcomers are welcome.


Wednesday, August 16

Pop-up Pantry

Time: 9:30 a.m.

Location: Mt. Zion UFL Center, 2340 177th Street, Lansing (708-394-3555)

Mt. Zion UFL Center partners with Illinois Partners In Hope to distribute a variety of donated food once or twice a week. These pop-up pantries are open to anyone, and no ID is required.

Crochet & Knitting Group

Time: 9:30 – 11:30 a.m.

Location: Lansing Public Library, Brick Room
2750 Indiana Avenue, Lansing

Bring your own supplies and learn some techniques. This is not a library-sponsored group, but it meets in the library’s Brick Room.

Senior VR Exploration

Time: 1 – 2 p.m.

Location: Lansing Public Library, Community Room
2750 Indiana Avenue, Lansing

District 158 School Board meeting

Time: 6 p.m.

Location: District 158 Administration Center, 18300 Greenbay Avenue, Lansing

District 158 meetings are usually scheduled for the third Wednesday of each month.

Hello Weekend

Time: 6:30 – 9:30 p.m.

Location: Fox Pointe, 18138 Henry Street, Lansing

Rescheduled from July 12, Hello Weekend continues Fox Pointe’s free Wednesday night concert series. Eric Donner will open the evening at 6 p.m., with Hello Weekend taking the stage at 7:30.

“Due to unforeseen circumstances, the previously scheduled Visions of Santana band will not be performing,” said the Fox Pointe website about the event.


Thursday, August 17

Library on the Go

Time: 4:30 – 6 p.m.

Weather permitting, the library’s book bike will be riding around the community, giving families easy access to books and services.

  • 4:30–5 p.m. – Lan-Oak Park
    18000 Arcadia Avenue, Lansing
  • 5–5:30 p.m. – El Encanto Food Truck
    17829 Burnham Avenue, Lansing
  • 5:30–6 p.m. – Schultz Park
    3340 N Schultz Drive, Lansing

Trivia at Kasey’s

Time: 7 p.m.

Location: Kasey’s Banquet Hall and Lounge, 17800 Lorenz Avenue, Lansing

Trivia with Nick At Night Entertainment happens every week on Thursdays. The restaurant opens at 5 p.m. Nick will start the show around 7 p.m.


Friday, August 18

Senior Bingo

Time: 1 – 2 p.m.

Location: Lansing Public Library, Community Room
2750 Indiana Avenue, Lansing

Seniors who like to play bingo and win prizes are invited to the Library’s Senior Bingo event.

Kasey’s Karaoke

Time: 7 p.m.

Location: Kasey’s Banquet Hall and Lounge, 17800 Lorenz Avenue, Lansing

Karaoke with Joe Sibley takes place every week on Fridays at Kasey’s Banquet Hall.

Teen Lock-in

Time: 7 p.m. – 6:45 a.m. on Saturday, August 19

Location: Lansing Public Library, 2750 Indiana Avenue, Lansing

Want to know how the library’s nightlife is? Come and stay the night! Limited to 20 students. Permission slips need to be turned in by August 16, 2023 for students to attend — 708-474-2447.


Saturday, August 19

Calumet River Creative Writers

Time: 10 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Location: Lansing Public Library, Community Room, 2750 Indiana Avenue, Lansing

Aspiring writers are invited to join a group that inspires creativity through writing.

Brides through the Decades

Time: 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Location: Lansing Public Library, lower level, 2750 Indiana Avenue, Lansing

In its final week, Brides Through the Decades is a summer exhibit at the Lansing Historical Society Museum featuring photos and commentary about fashion trends and traditions through the eras.

Blues, Brews, and Barbecue

Time: 2 – 10:30 p.m.

Location: Fox Pointe, 18138 Henry Street, Lansing

This annual event features four bands at the following times:

  • Lauren Dukes Band (3 – 4:30)
  • Derek Caruso & The Blues Fuse (5 – 6:30)
  • The Steepwater Band (7 – 8:30)
  • The Stoney Curtis Band (9 – 10:30)

One Trick Pony, Ace Catering, and Poppin’ P’ah’letas will be catering the event. Tickets are $5 online and $6 at the door.

Dick Diamond And The Dusters at Kasey’s Beer Garden

Time: 7 p.m. (Doors open at 5 p.m.)

Location: Kasey’s Banquet Hall and Lounge, 17800 Lorenz Avenue, Lansing

One of Lansing’s favorite bands takes the stage at Kasey’s — bring a lawn chair as seating is limited. Food and drink available for purchase.
