LANSING, Ill. (May 1, 2024) – The photos currently displayed on the library‘s gallery wall will remain in place for the month of May. The public is invited to view the weather gallery during regular library hours.
The 24 photos were all submitted by local photographers who captured glimpses of nature in suburban Lansing — parks and parking lots, insects and intersections, puddles and sunsets and patio gardens. The weather gallery provides a unique look at Lansing and the people who live here.
The photos have been available for purchase since the weather gallery opened, and many have been reserved. The $100 price covers the material cost of producing the enlargements, which have been printed on canvas, metal, or acrylic.
Art for the heart
Not all the images are typical “landscape photography.” Purchasers have made their selections for a variety of reasons.
Elizabeth Bush chose Daniel Cuthbert’s photo of a Lansing alley because “that one would most remind me of home if I ever moved away from Lansing.” Bush has an alley behind her house, and she brings her garbage can out there every week. The photo captures the everyday beauty she loves about Lansing.
Heather Talbot reserved two photos from the exhibit, including Brian Hardy’s photo of autumn trees on Chicago Avenue. Talbot lives in Virginia now, but she remembers the distinctive tree Hardy photographed. “My grandmother lived in that area, so I know that tree quite well!” she said.
Other weather gallery purchases were made because the photo depicted a cute animal or a favorite season or a unique perspective — or because of a personal connection to the photographer. Some photographers purchased their own photos, a physical copy of their digitally published work.
A gallery of Lansing
Each exhibit includes not only the photo, but also its date of publication in The Lansing Journal and the caption that appeared with it. Displayed in chronological order through the months, the photos create a visual journey through the seasons, but also through daily life in Lansing.
