Journal Journeys: Elizabeth Bush and the weather photo she purchased

LANSING, Ill. (April 4, 2024) – Elizabeth Bush said she really likes all the weather photos on display on the gallery wall. She has been back to the library several times specifically to see them. The one she decided to purchase was “Suburban Nature,” by Dan Cuthbert.

That photo, said Elizabeth, would most remind her of home if she were ever to move away from Lansing. She has an alley behind her house, and she brings her garbage can out there every week. Dan’s photo captures the kind of everyday beauty she loves about Lansing.

Elizabeth also commented on Josh Bootsma’s photo of last year’s wildfire smoke impacting Lansing. She remembers driving over the highway on Torrence one of those days and being amazed at how thick the haze was. “I’m so glad you included that,” she said, noting how important it was to mark that event, even though it wasn’t beautiful. It’s not a photo she would want to hang in her living room, but she’s glad it’s on the gallery wall.

The weather photo exhibition will be on display at the library through May, so most purchasers have to wait until then to bring their photos home. Dan Cuthbert’s mother had already claimed his photo on the night of the exhibition Open House. Elizabeth, however was savvy enough to ask about purchasing a reprint — and The Lansing Journal was happy to make those arrangements.

Having started in 2017 as a series of photos of people holding The Lansing Journal in various locations, the ongoing feature known as the Lansing Journal Journeys has officially expanded to include:

• People holding photocopies of The Lansing Journal’s logo in a variety of locations
• People indulging in Journal Java Chip ice cream from Gayety’s
• People enjoying a Lansing Journal Latte (hot or iced) at Kdulche Café
• People wearing their Published Photographer shirts to celebrate the special status that comes from being published in The Lansing Journal
• People with weather photos that were part of The Lansing Journal’s first photo exhibition

Enjoying the journeys

The fact is, we love to see our community represented in the Journal — and we love to see the Journal represented in our community. If you purchased one of the weather photos on the library gallery wall, go ahead and take a picture of yourself with the photo — or with the photographer! Send it to us for publication using the info below:

Email your photos to [email protected] and share:

1. Names of any people or animals in the photo
2. Name of the person who took the photo
3. Description or location of the photo
