Things to do in Lansing this week – October 23 edition

LANSING, Ill. (October 22, 2023) – The items listed below are public events compiled from a variety of community sources. They represent a diversity of ways to be involved this week.


Monday, October 23

Intro to Music Theory

Time: 4 – 5 p.m.

Location: Lansing Library, Teen Island, 2750 Indiana Avenue, Lansing

“Whether you’ve got a passing interest in music or know how to play an instrument (but not read sheet music) advance your capabilities with this glimpse into the study of the musical arts.” This event is for students in grades 6 – 12. Register here.

The History of Homes and Development of Lansing

Time: 6 – 7 p.m.

Location: Lansing Public Library, stage, 2750 Indiana Avenue, Lansing

This presentation is organized by the Lansing Historical Society.


Tuesday, October 24

Coffee Break

Time: 10:30 a.m.

Location: Lansing Public Library, 2750 Indiana Avenue, Lansing

Memorial Junior High McTeacher Night

Time: 4 – 7 p.m.

Location: McDonald’s, 17810 Torrence Avenue, Lansing

Memorial teachers and staff will be serving McDonald’s Apple Pies throughout the night, with all of the proceeds going to Memorial.

District 215 School Board meeting

Time: 6 p.m.

Location: TF Center for Academics and Technology, 1605 Wentworth Avenue, Calumet City

Wednesday, October 25

Pop-up Pantry

Time: 9:30 a.m.

Location: Mt. Zion UFL Center, 2340 177th Street, Lansing (708-394-3555)

Mt. Zion UFL Center partners with Illinois Partners In Hope to distribute a variety of donated food once or twice a week. These pop-up pantries are open to anyone, and no ID is required.

Crochet & Knitting Group

Time: 9:30 – 11:30 a.m.

Location: Lansing Public Library, Brick Room
2750 Indiana Avenue, Lansing

Bring your own supplies and learn some techniques. This is not a library-sponsored group, but it meets in the library’s Brick Room.

Create your own plush monsters

Time: 4 – 5:30 p.m.

Location: Lansing Public Library, Teen Island
2750 Indiana Avenue, Lansing

“Halloween approaches, and your inner mad scientist slowly awakens. And the urge to create something horrifying and monstrous fills your mind. Then join us for some creepy fun as we make plush monsters. Use mix-and-match templates and other materials to make your own unique creation.” Register here.


Thursday, October 26

A Fireproof Fallacy: The Iroquois Theater Tragedy

Time: 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Location: Lansing Public Library, Community Room

“An afternoon of comedy turned to nightmarish horror in one of the worst disasters to ever hit Chicago.”

Trivia at Kasey’s

Time: 7 p.m.

Location: Kasey’s Banquet Hall and Lounge, 17800 Lorenz Avenue, Lansing

Trivia with Nick At Night Entertainment happens every week on Thursdays. The restaurant opens at 5 p.m. Nick will start the show around 7 p.m.


Friday, October 27

Halloween Horror Night At Pour on Roy: Scream 2022

Time: 5 – 7:45 p.m.

Location: Pour on Roy, 18155 Roy Street, Lansing

Ages 21 and up: “Who loves a good horror movie during the spooky season? Delivering a thrilling blend of suspense, self-aware humor, and twists, Scream 2022 will surely hit all those nostalgic notes along with appetizers! Join us at Pour on Roy for this fun hair-raising fun event!” Register here.

Spooky Teen Party

Time: 8 – 11:45 p.m.

Location: Lansing Public Library, Youth Department

“Come to the Library for their annual Halloween Party! Spooks, treats, and scary movies! Booooo!” For students in grades 6–12. Register by calling 708-474-2447.

Kasey’s Karaoke

Time: 7 p.m.

Location: Kasey’s Banquet Hall and Lounge, 17800 Lorenz Avenue, Lansing

Karaoke with Joe Sibley takes place every week on Fridays at Kasey’s Banquet Hall.


Saturday, October 28

Run for Refugees 5k

Time: 9 a.m.

Location: Living Word Church, 2248 186th Street, Lansing

Hosted by the Welcome Network, the Run for Refugees 5k will start and end at Living Word Church in Lansing. The run will aid the Welcome Network in their work of “welcoming the stranger.”

Trick or Treat at Fox Pointe

Time:  2 – 4 p.m.

Location: Fox Pointe, 18138 Henry Street, Lansing

This annual free event allows families to go trick-or-treating at Fox Pointe. Local businesses, organizations, and families have signed up to pass out candy at the venue. The winners of the Monster Mash decorating contest will also be announced.

Trunk or Treat at First Christian Church

Time: 2 – 5 p.m.

Location: First Christian Church of Lansing, 2921 Ridge Road

Local families are invited to bring their kids to gather treats at First Christian Church of Lansing.

Trunk or Treat at Knights of Columbus

Time: 4 – 7 p.m.

Location: Kasey’s Banquet Hall and Lounge, 17800 Lorenz Avenue, Lansing

“Please join us for some ghoulish, spooky, and frightening trunks to choose from!” This event is free for the public.

Kasey’s 80s Halloween Party

Time: 7 p.m. – midnight

Location: Kasey’s Banquet Hall and Lounge, 17800 Lorenz Avenue, Lansing

Attendees are urged to “Dress up in your ‘rad’ 80s costumes to win prizes.” Free appetizers and candy will be offered at 8 p.m. DJ Ron will be playing 80s music starting at 7.
