Obituary: Sharlotte A. Smits

November 29, 1942 – October 14, 2023

Sharlotte A. SmitsSharlotte A. Smits, nee Visser, age 80, of Crete, IL went home to her Lord and Savior on Saturday, October 14, 2023. Beloved wife of Glenn Smits. Loving mother of Timothy (Stacia) Smits, Karen (Donald) Egeler, and Shelly (James) Hicks. Cherished grandmother of Lorin Smits, Drew Smits, Joshua Smits, Luke (Isabel) Egeler, and Matthew (Victoria) Egeler and great-grandmother of Sophie Egeler. Dear sister of the late Simon (Arlene) Visser, Mervin (Sharon) Visser, late Arlene (late Richard) Evenhouse, late Alan (late Maridel) Visser, late Janis (Robert) Iwema, late Carol (David) Rozema. Kind aunt to many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her parents Simon and Jennie (nee DeJong) Visser. A special thanks to the caregivers over the years especially Karen DeJong and Debbie DeYoung, Jennifer Lanting, Stephanie Michalski, Karen Koning, Jamie Boverhof, Jori Van Baren, Abby Mingerink, and Annet Ophoff, all who spent many days tenderly caring for Shar during her long extended illness. We could not have done it without them.

Shar was a long-time member of the First CRC (OPC) Church of South Holland, IL. She enjoyed her part-time work in the Clearing Department at South Holland Bank. She was involved over the years with many church groups at First Church and school organizations at Calvin Christian School and Illiana Christian High School and particularly enjoyed her service as an Elim Key lady. She was loved by many and will be missed.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, from 3 – 8 p.m. at Smits Funeral Home, 2121 Pleasant Springs Lane, Dyer, IN. A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, October 19, 2023, at 11 a.m. at First Orthodox Presbyterian Church, 16248 South Park Ave., South Holland, IL with services conducted by Rev. Dan Svendsen. ( The service will be live-streamed through the First OPC of South Holland’s YouTube page). Burial will take place at Oak Ridge Cemetery – Lansing, IL.

In memory of Shar, Memorial contributions may be given to Calvin Christian School, Illiana Christian High School, or Elim Christian Services.
