Video: Record number of Lansing students go to State for science fair

Nine students from Memorial Junior High compete in the Illinois State Science Fair this weekend

LANSING, Ill. (April 28, 2023) – The gym at Memorial Junior High was filled with Lansing dignitaries, cheering sixth-graders, enthusiastic cheerleaders, spirited band members, and proud parents on Friday morning. They had gathered to give a proper send-off to nine Memorial students who excelled in the area-wide science fair and the regional science fair and were now headed to Carbondale, Illinois, to compete at the state level.

The nine students would be bringing eight projects to the competition:

  • Anay Aleman, Grade 7: Are Cats Right or Left Pawed? (Behavioral Science)
  • Josiah Carter, Grade 7: Dribble It! (Physics)
  • Miguel Chavez and Julian Rivera, Grade 8: Does a Homemade Water Filter Have Cleaner Water than a Manufactured Water Filter? (Environmental Science)
  • Kyle Jones, Grade 7: Do Submarines Need Fins? (Physics Experimental)
  • Drew Losnedahl, Grade 7: Discovering the Optimal Growing Conditions of Oyster Mushrooms (Botany) – Drew received a perfect score at Regionals
  • Mya Major, Grade 8: Does Different Type of Music Affect Heart Rate? (Behavioral Science)
  • Szion Pullin, Grade 8: Do Plants Need Electrolytes? (Botany)
  • Benjamin Williams, Grade 7: Can Temperature Change the Strength of a Magnet? (Physics)

About the Illinois State Science Fair

Officially known as the Illinois Junior Academy of Science State Fair, the state competition is hosted at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois. Friday is a project set-up day, and students also have an opportunity to tour the SIU campus. On Saturday, the judging begins at 9 a.m., and public viewing of the projects takes place from 12:30 – 3 p.m. Awards are announced from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.
