Obituary: John W. Kraai

January 26, 1941 – April 2, 2024

John W. Kraai John W. Kraai, age 83, of Palos Heights, IL, went home to his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, April 2, 2024. Beloved husband of Gay Kraai, nee Klompmaker. Loving father of Alison (Andrew) Weeks and Sarah Bowers. Cherished grandfather of Henry (Gina Babinec) Weeks, Charles Weeks, Jacob Bowers, John Weeks, and Darcy Bowers. Dear brother-in-law of Jay (Mary Ann) Klompmaker and Darcy Krulisky. Devoted uncle of several nieces and a nephew. Preceded in death by his parents Arthur and Helen Kraai. John always made sure his family knew how much he loved them.

John was a graduate of Illiana High School and furthered his education at the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana where he earned a degree in architecture. He remained a lifelong Illini fan and would regularly be seen wearing his Illinois hat. His career started at Perkins & Will and he later started his own architectural firm earning multiple awards from the American Institute of Architects.

He was an active member of the South Holland community including serving on boards for District 205, the Eastern Illinois Chapter of the AIA, Glenwood School for Boys, South Holland Planning Commission as well as deacon and elder of his church.

John was a devoted family man, a dear friend, a true success in work and life, and always steadfast in his faith. His warmth, wisdom, and the joy he brought to every gathering will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Visitation Saturday, April 6, 2024, from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at First Reformed Church, 15924 South Park Ave., South Holland, IL with services conducted by Rev. James Oord. Interment Oak Ridge Cemetery – Lansing, IL. Memorial contributions may be given to Alzheimer’s Association or Elim Christian Services. Arrangements entrusted to Smits Funeral Home – Dyer, IN.
