Legion presents checks to Lansing Police and Fire departments

LANSING, Ill. (December 8, 2023) – Members of Lansing’s American Legion Riders came before the Village Board of Trustees Tuesday to present the Lansing Police and Fire departments with checks for $500 each.

“In our fundraising, our main objective is to support veterans and first responders, and do some good in the community when we can,” said Nick Grigutis, president of the Legion Riders Chapter 697.

Lansing’s Legion Riders also welcome veterans home from Honor Flights, and escort veterans or their families for various events, often in coordination with first responders.

Receiving the checks Tuesday night were Lansing Police Chief Al Phillips and Lansing Fire Chief Chad Kooyenga.

“When we get checks like this, we do our best to put this back into the community,” Phillips said, referencing LPD’s annual Shop with a Cop event.

Kooyenga said the LFD often uses the money for things like EMS equipment. “We have an auto pulse, which is high quality CPR” he said.

“Thank you all for your service. And what you do for the community is awesome, we’re always happy to support you guys,” Kooyenga said.
