Obituary: Joseph F. Mucharski

August 2, 1936 – October 1, 2023

Joseph F. Mucharski Joseph F. Mucharski, retired C.P.D., age 87, late of Schererville, IN, formerly of Hegewisch, IL, passed away peacefully Sunday, October 1, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. Loving husband of 62 years of Margaret Mucharski, nee Smierciak. Devoted father of Cathy (Brian) Mahoney, Linda Presley, and Michael (Kimberly) Mucharski. Proud grandfather of Stephan, Christopher, Margaret, Billy, Gerry, Angie, Leah, Jacob, and John; great-grandfather of Camden. Dearest brother-in-law of Laura Popovich. Preceded in death by his parents Joseph A. and Angeline Mucharski.

Joe served in the US Army and retired from the Chicago Police Department as a sergeant with 39 years of service. Some of the duties Joe carried out in his career include the 12th District Tactical Unit, the West Side Gang Crimes Unit and finishing his career at the Organized Crime Unit. He was also head of security at Comiskey Park for many years. Some of the events he witnessed and served in during his career include the 1968 Democratic Convention and subsequent riots, the first visit of Pope John Paul, the Bears Super Bowl parade, and many other historical events in the City of Chicago. Nothing in the world was more important to Joe than his family and dear friends. He enjoyed good food, martinis, and the Cubs.

Visitation Friday, October 6, 2023, from 3 – 8 p.m. Prayer service Saturday, October 7, 2023, at 9 a.m. from Smits Funeral Home, 2121 Pleasant Springs Lane, Dyer, IN, to St. Maria Goretti Church 500 Northgate Drive, Dyer, IN for a 10 a.m. funeral Mass, with Rev. Leo Gajardo officiating.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Shriners Children’s Hospital, or Hospice of the Calumet Area, appreciated.
