Thank you, August supporters, for putting us on the path to sustainability

Because of you we can go even further

LANSING, Ill. (September 1, 2023) – “These publishers were selected from more than 130 applications from news businesses based in the U.S., Puerto Rico, and Canada. We selected them based on their clarity of purpose, urgency in tackling challenges, and alignment with the program’s objectives.”

Those two sentences were part of the announcement I received yesterday morning letting me know The Lansing Journal has been selected to participate in a Sustainability Lab. The lab is a collaboration between the Google News Initiative and LION Publishers. (LION is an organization we belong to for Local Independent Online News publishers.) As part of the program we will receive training, coaching, and funding to overcome the revenue challenges we face in serving our community.

Because of you, The Lansing Journal was among the news publishers selected to participate in a Sustainability Lab.

Sustainability — because of you

While I’m eager to start the lab and become a truly sustainable news business, I also want to celebrate the steps toward sustainability we’ve already taken — because of you. Your investment in this scrappy little newspaper has helped us grow from 2017 until now. Because of you we have more journalists on the team, we are publishing more stories each month, we are reaching new people with information that connects them to the community.

Because of you, other organizations recognize our “clarity of purpose,” our “urgency in tackling challenges,” and our “alignment with the program’s objectives” — all part of the path to sustainability.

There is much work ahead of us. The training will be intense. But we are excited to participate because we believe it will help us become a more robust source of independent news in our community. You’ve told us you depend on the information we provide, and we want to keep delivering it. So we welcome the help.

And we thank you for making it possible.

Thank you, August supporters and sustainers
