Things to do in Lansing this week – August 7 edition

LANSING, Ill. (August 6, 2023) – The items listed below are public events compiled from a variety of community sources. They represent a diversity of ways to be involved this week.


Monday, August 7

5:30–7:30 p.m. – Brides through the Decades

Mondays 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., through August 19
A summer exhibit at the Lansing Historical Society Museum, featuring photos and commentary about fashion trends and traditions through the eras.

6 p.m. – Common Ground Meeting

In a diverse community like Lansing, Illinois, Common Ground offers opportunities for residents to learn more about each other through one-on-one conversation. This group meeting of Common Ground is open to interested newcomers.

Tuesday, August 8

1:30 – 2:30 p.m. – Free blood pressure and glucose screenings

The Lansing Fire Department offers monthly health checks on the second Tuesday of each month from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

Wednesday, August 9

9:30 a.m. – Pop-Up Pantry

Mt. Zion UFL Center partners with Illinois Partners In Hope to distribute a variety of donated food once or twice a week. These pop-up pantries are open to anyone, and no ID is required.

9:30 – Crochet & Knitting Group

Bring your own supplies and learn some techniques. This is not a library-sponsored group, but it meets in the library’s Brick Room.

1 p.m. – Clay pinch pots

This teen-focused event will teach participants how to make their own clay pinch pots. Once the pots are baked, they’ll be painted. Registration required.

6 p.m. – Elton Jeff and the Honky Cats

Fox Pointe’s free Wednesday night summer concert series continues with Elton Jeff and the Honky Cats. Brian Mundee will open the night. Gates open at 6 p.m., with the headliner taking the stage at 7:30.


Thursday, August 10

4:30 – 6 p.m. – Library on the Go

Weather permitting, the library’s book bike will be riding around the community, giving families easy access to books and services.

The Lansing Human Relations Commission meets monthly on the second Thursday of each month.

7 p.m. – Trivia at Kasey’s

Trivia with Nick At Night Entertainment happens every week on Thursdays. The restaurant opens at 5 p.m. Nick will start the show around 7 p.m.

Friday, August 11

8:30 – 10 p.m. – Puss in Boots: The Last Wish

The public is invited to watch Puss in Boots: The Last Wish on the front lawn of the Lansing Library. Those coming should bring a lawn chair or blanket. The movie is rated PG with a runtime of 1:42.

Saturday, August 12

10 a.m. – 1 p.m. – Book sale at Lansing Library

The Lansing Library is having a book sale, selling a variety of materials, including children’s books. Friends of the Library Members have access at 9 a.m.

7 p.m. – 5 N’ Time Band at Kasey’s Beer Garden

Gates open at 5 p.m. The concert is free, and food and drink will be available for purchase. 5 N’ Time Band specializes in southern and classic rock music.
