The people’s paper

Thank you, July supporters

LANSING, Ill. (August 2, 2023) – When I started with The Lansing Journal in 2017, I thought I knew what a community newspaper was. A newspaper is news; a community is people; so it seemed fairly obvious that a community newspaper would be a newspaper serving a specific community of people.

That’s true, but it’s not complete.

Not only does The Lansing Journal provide news about the people of our community, we also publish opinions from these people (Local Voices) and photos by these people (Weather, Journal Journeys). We include people’s names, pictures, and stories because that’s a way we can help our community to get to know each other.

This is how the article appears in the print issue of E&P. Clicking the image will take you to the online version of the print issue.

Sidebar: Somehow this kind of journalism attracted the attention of Editor & Publisher magazine, which is “America’s Oldest Journal Covering the Newspaper Industry.” They wrote a nice article about The Lansing Journal and The Spokesman-Review (Spokane, Washington). You can see a digital copy of that issue (which is where the featured image above came from) by clicking the image at right. Or you can read just the article by using this link: How two local news publishers are creating a sense of community while proving their value

And underneath the people’s reporting, the people’s opinions, and the people’s photos, is the people’s support that makes it all possible.

Each person listed below is someone who has invested in this community newspaper so that it can continue to serve the people. Because of them, we can remain an independent source of news and information. We don’t have to be the government’s paper, or the billionaire’s paper, or even my paper. We can be the people’s paper.

I’m grateful for each supporter listed below — and I hope you are too. Their generosity and commitment makes it possible for all of us regular people to have our own newspaper.
