SOUTH HOLLAND, Ill. (January 29, 2021) – The Business & Career Institute (BCI) of South Suburban College is presenting two virtual workshops in the coming months, Racism Anonymous: Exploring the Hidden Power of Racism in the Workplace on Thursday, February 25 from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon, and Crucial Conversations: Recognizing & Addressing Sexual Harassment in the Workplace on Wednesday, March 3 from 9:00 – 10:15 am.

Hidden Power of Racism details

In this three-hour introductory workshop, participants will explore the internal and external influences that shape personal and racial identities. The webinar will examine racism and how those mostly invisible forces elicit structural advantages for some, but also create many harmful impacts on our society and those living within it.

Facilitator AnDrea Larkin Hendrix will primarily address four crucial questions:

  1. What is racism really and how does it affect everyone?
  2. How has racism contributed to the shaping of your identity?
  3. How does racism show up as a power system in our culture and at work?
  4. What do I need to know in order to fight racism on the job?

This introductory workshop demonstrates that productive conversations about race are possible and that there is an effective methodology for facilitating them. The workshop may serve as a starting point for an organizational journey toward becoming an anti-racist, multicultural organization.

Ms. Hendrix is an educator who loves to harness critical thinking and healthy debate to inspire learning. She has taught at the college and university levels for 25 years. She has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communication and in History, and a Master of Education degree in Instructional Technology specializing in HR training and development. Hendrix uses her Ph.D. studies in Rhetoric to examine how people use symbols and messages to create knowledge.

There are 3.0 PDCs are available for SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP and HRCI certification holders. Certificates of completion will be available upon request.

This virtual workshop is sponsored in part by Providence Bank, the South Holland Business Association and the South Suburban Cook HR Association. Sexual Harassment in the Workplace details

Allegations of sexual harassment and workplace misconduct have permeated the news in the last few years. As a result, in 2020 Governor Pritzker mandated all Illinois businesses to provide sexual harassment training for all employees at least once a year. In the webinar, HR Consultant Alexandra Glumac will address three important questions:

  • What is sexual harassment?
  • What do you do if you experience or witness it?
  • Whose responsibility is it to stop it?

There are 1.0 PDCs available for SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP and HRCI certification holders. Certificates of completion will be available upon request for individuals representing other industries, to satisfy Governor Pritzker’s mandate.

The workshop is sponsored in part by the South Suburban Cook Human Resources Association. The cost is just $25 per person or $20 per person if 3 or more from the same company attend (add $10 surcharge for PDC’s).

The workshop will be held virtually and reservations are required. To register, please email [email protected] or call (708) 225-6055. Reservations are required by 12 noon on Monday, March 1. For additional information please call (708) 596-2000, ext. 3254 or email [email protected].
