CHICAGO HEIGHTS, Ill. (June 5, 2018) – Marian Catholic junior Evelyn Santillan, of Harvey, Illinois, was awarded the Wellesley Book Award for 2018.
The Book Award Program recognizes young women who have been chosen by their high schools for their intelligence, determination, motivation, and achievement. They are visible members of their communities and academic leaders in their schools. Wellesley College’s history is rich with women who have demonstrated excellence in the classroom and in personal achievements. Wellesley College hopes to continue that legacy with the Book Award.
Santillan stood out to the selection committee because of her outstanding academic achievement at Marian Catholic High School and her long list of service activities, including a community garden project in her hometown. Santillan also volunteers with Restoration Ministries, a community outreach program based in Harvey.
Santillan plans to study Biology in college and wants to work in medicine. She is hoping to apply to the QuestBridge Program, which would allow a full ride to the school of her choice. Wellesley College is one of her top choices.
She attributes her passion for reading to the Nancy Drew series, which she was introduced to by a pen pal from North Carolina, who would send her copies from this series with her letters.
