Village answers resident concerns about Lead Informational Notice from IEPA

“It creates a bit of a kerfuffle,” says Village Administrator Dan Podgorski

LANSING, Ill. (June 19, 2024) – More than 8,500 Lansing residents received a notice earlier this month headlined, “You are served by an unknown material service line that may contain lead.” The notice is a requirement from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA). More people received it than originally planned.

“We wanted to send out about 2,000–2,500 letters,” explained Jeff Pintar, an engineer from Robinson Engineering who serves as Lansing’s Village Engineer. The number of recipients had to be increased however, because the IEPA changed the way a line is classified as “unknown.” That change resulted in four times as many lines being considered “unknown,” and four times as many residents receiving the lead informational notice.

Pintar explained the situation to the Village Board at the June 18 Committee of the Whole meeting, under Trustee Leo Valencia’s Buildings and Public Works report (Item 10):

Residents who have additional questions or concerns about the IPEA notice or about lead service lines are invited to contact the Village Engineers directly at 815-412-2015.
