Pair of South Holland events to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. this weekend

SOUTH HOLLAND, Ill. (January 11, 2023) – Two free events will honor the memory and ideology of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in South Holland this weekend. Both starting at 10 a.m., Saturday’s event will take place at Spirit of God Fellowship and Monday’s will be at South Suburban College.

MLK Tribute – Spirit of God Fellowship – January 13

The Village of South Holland and the South Holland Ministerial Association are partnering to again bring an Martin Luther King, Jr. tribute to life on Saturday.

The event, which starts at 10 a.m., will include participation from local South Holland ministers, including Brian Kamstra, Richard Zekveld, Dr. Ozzie E. Smith, Jr., Philip F. Tarver, and a keynote address from Dr. Patrick L. Daymond of Covenant United Church of Christ in South Holland. Music will be provided by a band and choir comprised of South Holland churches, and South Holland Mayor Don De Graff will provide closing remarks at the event.

“Light refreshments will be served following the service, and attendees will receive a special memento to help remember the message of Dr. King all year round. All are welcome to attend this free event!” says an online description of the event.

MLK Commemoration – South Suburban College – January 15

On MLK Day, South Suburban College will host a commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. starting at 10 a.m. The event — which is in collaboration with Thornton Township District 205 — will take place in the college’s Kindig Performing Arts Center.

The theme of the event is, “Letting Freedom Ring from Stone Mountain, 60 Years Later.”

Speakers are the event will include: Bishop Lance Davis, Senior Pastor of New Zion Covenant Church, Illinois State Senator Napoleon B. Harris, SSC Chairman Terry R. Wells, SSC President Dr. Lynette D. Stokes, Thornton Township High School District 205 Board of Education President Nina Graham, Thornton Township High School District 205 Superintendent Dr. Nathaniel Cunningham, Jr., Thornton Township High School District 205 Student Board of Education President Margaret Gonzalez, with an invocation by Reverend Dr. Ozzie E. Smith, Jr., Pastor Emeritus of Covenant United Church of Christ.

The event will also include student performances from District 205 and South Suburban College students.

The Kindig Performing Arts Center at South Suburban College is located at 15800 South State Street in South Holland.
