Because of you, crosswords and weather photos get published too

Thank you, June supporters

LANSING, Ill. (July 4, 2023) – You might have noticed the “TOP POSTS this week” on our website’s home page. Those three stories are the ones that had the most online views during the past week.

Because of you
A recent screenshot shows the top posts of the week of July 2, 2023.

Typically the stories that make it into that section are big, sometimes dramatic, news. Throughout June, our most-viewed articles included items of business, politics, education, and good causes — for example:

  • Construction begins on Torrence Taco Bell
  • Thornton Township Board declares Assessor ‘absent from duties’
  • Lansing to phase in water increase
  • Thursday pop-up pantry to include free tablets; ID required

These four stories totaled thousands of views in June.

On the other end of the popularity spectrum, two main article types rarely achieve more than 200 views: the Sunday crossword and the daily weather photo. And yet, if I measure popularity by face-to-face mentions rather than online views, these could easily be considered “top posts.” The weather posts in particular seem to generate a sense of community among the viewers and the photographers, and I love having a way to showcase some of the beautiful details of our town from a variety of shutterbugs.

Big news like political maneuverings and water rate increases — that’s important to our community. Because of you, this local newspaper is on the scene to report that news. Thank you.

But the smaller stories are important too. And because of you, we’re able to publish those daily photos, those unique ways of seeing our town, those weekly puzzles that give busy people a little break. Thank you for that too.

Thank you, June supporters, for supporting big news and little news
