LANSING, Ill. (June 15, 2023) – Former Lansing Municipal Airport manager Bob Malkas has written a book chronicling some of the history of Lansing’s airport.

The Village of Lansing and its Airport: Past, Present, Future takes readers into the recent history of the Lansing Municipal Airport, starting in the 70s when the Village of Lansing became its public sponsor.

“No one wanted another O’Hare or Midway in their backyard, but once it was made clear that was not the intention of federal, state, and local planners, [residents] became less concerned and stepped back to allow the process to continue,” said Malkas. “The book takes the readers by the hand and walks them through the process used to convince Lansing first, then the Southland that its future could benefit from supporting what was needed by the aviation community of the nation.”

A part of the book’s description reads, “While the book tells the history of events in the airport’s development, it also provides a guided virtual tour through the pages of history and gives the reader an opportunity to participate as if they were actually reliving the experiences.”

Malkas retired in 2008 after serving as the Lansing Municipal Airport Manager for 23 years. In the years since, he has remained invested in the airport’s success, often commenting at Lansing Village Board meetings on airport-related matters.

“When my advice was disregarded, I decided to go directly to the public and use the book to achieve that goal,” Malkas said.

The Village of Lansing and its Airport: Past, Present, Future is available from Dorrance Publishing and from Barnes and Noble.
