LANSING, Ill. (June 11, 2023) – The Lansing Journal has gathered information from a variety of sources about public events, meetings, and activities in town this week. The items listed below are all public events and represent a diversity of ways to be involved in this community.

Monday, June 12

5:30–7:30 p.m. – Brides through the Decades

Mondays 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., through August 19
A summer exhibit at the Lansing Historical Society Museum, featuring photos and commentary about fashion trends and traditions through the eras.

Tuesday, June 13

1:30–2:30 p.m. – Free BP and Blood Glucose Screenings

The Lansing Fire Department offers monthly health checks on the second Tuesday of each month at the Lansing Municipal Center (Village Hall).

6 p.m. – District 215 Special Board meeting

The District 215 Board will meet to discuss “the appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employee(s), specific independent contractors, specific volunteers, or District legal counsel; Litigation, when an action against, affecting, or on behalf of the District has been filed and is pending before a court or administrative tribunal, or when the Board finds that an action is probable or imminent.” The meeting is open to the public, though much of it will be in closed session. Junior gardeners will learn fun garden facts and will get to grow their own garden in the library courtyard.

Wednesday, June 14

9–11 a.m. – Coffee with a Cop

Members of the Lansing Police Department will be at Dunkin Donuts, ready to enjoy coffee and conversation with members of the community. McDonald’s will provide a free iced or hot small McCafe Coffee.

9:30–11:30 a.m. – Crochet & Knitting Group

Bring your own supplies and learn some techniques from this talented group! This is not a library-sponsored group, but it meets in the library’s Brick Room.

10–11 a.m. – Morning Tai-Chi

Adults 18 and older are invited to start their summer mornings with peaceful Tai-Chi sessions on the library front lawn, with instructor Brian Thompson from BNew4Life.

1–2 p.m. – Senior Virtual Reality Exploration

Seniors can get a first-hand preview of the latest high-tech virtual reality experience, thanks to funding provided by AgeOptions.

5–7 p.m. – Business After Hours

Members of the Lansing Area Chamber of Commerce will meet at LARC to network with each other and learn more about the services LARC provides the community.

5:30–6:30 p.m. – Mi Casita Bilingual Program, registration required by July 12

Kids in kindergarten to 5th Grade can engage in an enriching bilingual experience as the class reads a book in Spanish and English followed by a fun activity.

6 p.m. – Planning and Zoning Board meeting

The Planning and Zoning Board meets as needed, and citizens are welcome to attend. At this week’s meeting, Commissioners will hear a request from Glazier Lansing regarding the outdoor seating for Chipotle, which is hoping to open a restaurant at the northwest corner of Torrence and Thornton-lansing Road. They will also hear from Tanya White regarding a daycare and art center located at 19273–19279 Burnham.

6 p.m. – Fox Pointe

The Wednesday night concert series continues, and this week’s opening act is Lauren Dukes, taking the stage at 6 p.m. At 7:30 p.m. the main act begins — ReTurn2SouL. Their specialty is old school R & B, Motown, pop, and even some jazz and blues. Members of the Common Ground program are planning to attend this week’s concert wearing Common Ground orange.

Thursday, June 15

1–5 p.m. – Library on the Go

Weather permitting, the library’s book bike will be riding around the community, giving families easy access to books and services.

8:30 p.m. – Movie on the Library Lawn: Soul

The public is encouraged to bring chairs and blankets in order to watch a movie on the library lawn. Soul is rated PG and has a runtime of 1:40.

Saturday, June 17

10 a.m. – Bike Rodeo at Walmart

Kids up to age 13 can bring their helmets and bikes and try the Riders Course at the Lansing Walmart. The Lansing Police Department will be there to provide bicycle safety checks and safety handouts. Snacks and raffles will be available.

10 a.m.–12:30 p.m. – Calumet River Creative Writers

This is not a library-sponsored meeting, but aspiring writers are invited to join a group that inspires creativity through writing.

2 p.m. – Frozen with a Firefighter

Kids up to 13 years old are invited to visit members of the Lansing Fire Department at McDonald’s giving tours of their fire truck. Buy-One-Get-One-free frozen drinks will be available.

7 p.m. – Free outdoor concert at Kasey’s Banquet Hall

The Elevation Blues Band will play at Kasey’s Banquet Hall, Restaurant & Lounge in the Beer Garden. The concert is free, and food and drink will be available for purchase. “Some great BBQ on the grill,” says Mike Myers, Kasey’s Manager.
