Thornton Historical Society to host steamboat tour of Cedar Lake

THORNTON, Ill. (May 15, 2025) – The Village of Thornton Historical Society invites the public for a steamboat tour of Cedar Lake, IN on Wednesday, June 28.

Participants will cruise aboard “Steamer Dewey,” an authentic steamboat (c. 1915), where Cedar Lake history comes alive as guests discover the science behind steam power. The 45-minute ride will highlight the history of Lassen’s Resort, from its 1896 founding with a single steamboat that ferried passengers from the Monon rail depot, to all points around the lake, through its bustling years as a summer getaway.

Participants should meet at the museum at Lassen’s Resort – 7408 Constitution Avenue, Cedar Lake, IN 46303. Please arrive 15 minutes early. Steamboat ticket includes same-day admission to The Museum at Lassen’s Resort to experience the Story of Cedar Lake exhibit gallery.

Tickets are $40. The Thornton Historical Society can take 20 people for the 1 p.m. tour and 20 for the 3 p.m. tour. Those interested should contact Debbie at [email protected] to arrange tickets, including which time is preferred.

The nearby Cedar Lake Farmer’s Market is open from 3 – 6 p.m. and will have food trucks, and the nearby Lighthouse Restaurant is open from 4 – 9 p.m.
