TFS Badminton players show solidarity with Ukraine as season starts

By Josh Bootsma

LANSING, Ill. (March 3, 2022) – As the TFS South Girls Badminton team gathered for a team photo this week, they didn’t don the usual red and gray of TF South, instead they sported blue and yellow bows — the colors of the Ukrainian flag.

Coach Bob Tengstrand said as the team started practicing, he sensed the student athletes were affected by news coverage detailing the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“A couple girls were saddened by watching CNN news coverage, so I asked if showing support would help them,” Tengstrand said.

The girls agreed, taking the photo below while wearing Ukrainian colors:

TFS’ first badminton matches will occur on March 16 at Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville. The TF South team currently includes 36 girls, split between three levels of competition.

“[We are] expecting to have a great season,” Tengstrand said.
