Local News Matters

Thank you, February supporters

by Melanie Jongsma, Publisher

LANSING, Ill. (March 2, 2022) – When our TVs and radios are broadcasting news of war, and Major League Baseball, and the State of the Union address, maybe small-town news doesn’t seem important.

Or maybe that’s when local news matters more than ever.

After all, the teachers and kids who created their own Olympics competition at Lansing Christian School learned good sportsmanship and mutual encouragement. That matters to all of us — because these elementary students are our future world citizens.

And TF South Senior Dutchess King learned that hard work and preparation can take you places you’ve never been before — in life and in wrestling. That matters to all of us, for her milestones can inspire our own.

Even the local obituaries posted this month are important. Those stories remind us that the community we enjoy today was built and shaped by regular people who worked hard and served well. Their example matters.

From weather-related school closures, to meetings of local governing bodies, to COVID updates, to proper recycling — The Lansing Journal published 139 locally relevant articles in February, the work of 6 local reporters. Each story was posted to keep our community informed and connected in one way or another. That connection matters when the world feels like it’s falling apart.

I am grateful for readers who understand that and are willing to invest in it. Local support matters to a local newspaper like ours.

Monthly giving matters

Monthly giving is especially important for this local newspaper. When people commit to a recurring gift of a set amount each month, we are able to focus on reporting, publishing, and delivering local news. We feel a special gratitude for these monthly sustainers who gave gifts in February:
