Positivity rates added
information gathered from the Illinois Department of Public Health, the Cook County Department of Public Health, and the Indiana State Department of Health
LANSING, Ill. (July 29, 2020) – The Lansing Journal partners with HiGeorge to gather and present COVID-19 data from a variety of sources each day.
The chart above shows positivity rates for the current day as well as the overall positivity rate since March 16, when data began to be tracked. The fatality rate is the percentage of positive-testing people who died, on the current day and overall.
The formulas used to calculate positivity rates are:
- Today’s rate = (Positive increase in cases for that day) / (test results increase for that day)
- Overall rate = (Total number of cases since 3/16) / (total tests since 3/16)

I just checked two other sites including IL Dept. Public Health and the numbers reported here don’t match. Your report states 7,654 total deaths, IDPH states 7,462. That’s a 192 deaths difference.
Total Cases reported by IDPH is 175,124 that does not round up to 176K. This is not the first time your report did not add up so I thought to give you a heads up. If I am wrong let me know.

Hi Mel, thank you for letting us know about the discrepancies you noticed. I checked with the data team a HiGeorge (they put together the graphs for us), and here’s how they explained it: “The source that we are using pulls its numbers directly from IDPH. The only difference is that it includes probable deaths as well as confirmed deaths, whereas IDPH lists them separately. Yesterday, for instance, the confirmed death number was 7,462 deaths. There were also 192 probable deaths, so 7462 + 192 = 7,654 deaths in total, which is the figure displayed on our dashboards.” I’m glad to know you are fact checking! Please let us know if you see anything else that needs further explanation.
