Obituary Karen Adams

Karen G. Adams (nee Mattson), age 82 of Munster, IN, formerly of Lansing, IL, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, May 4, 2024. Karen was born in Blue Island, IL, in 1941. She graduated from Fenger High School in 1959. Karen married her high school sweetheart, David, in 1960, and they moved to Lansing in 1964. She loved the Lord and was a member of Cornerstone Church for many years.

She loved being a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. As a young mom, she pushed her family to explore the world with camping adventures, day-trips to Chicago’s many museums and theaters, weekend bike rides along Chicago’s waterfront, or lazy picnics at the Indiana Dunes. Her enthusiasm and fearlessness always meant a fun day was to be had.

After raising four children, Karen worked as a tour guide to Washington D.C., Springfield, and many other places east of the Mississippi. Volunteer work was always an important part of Karen’s life. She was co-chair of the Lansing Community Food Pantry for many years and volunteered at the Shedd Aquarium as a tour guide and diver in the Caribbean Reef Exhibit for 20 years. She enjoyed knitting, swimming, and playing the ukelele.

Karen lived a life of curiosity and adventure well into her later years, frequently starting a conversation with ”Guess what I just did!” One never knew what to expect. Scuba diving, Broadway plays, snow skiing in Colorado, high tea at the Raffles Hotel in Singapore, and many trips, often solo, to exotic locales like China, Philippines, Africa, and Israel. These stories were usually accompanied with her husband Dave’s world-class eye-rolls and wry smile. He knew, as did we, that “You Only Live Once” was embedded in Karen’s DNA.

Karen is survived by her son Michael (Noel) Adams of Santa Paula, CA; her daughter Katherine (Roger) Zigterman of Cedar Lake, IN; her son Robert (Nancy) Adams of Homewood, IL; and her son David J. (Jennifer) Adams of Charleston, SC. Grandchildren Brian (Andrea) Adams, Joseph Adams, Alexander Adams, Kevin (Ali) Adams, Matthew (Emily) Adams, Isaac Adams, Jasmine (Joseph) Piescik, and Joshua Adams. Great-grandchildren Anna and Emily. Siblings Diane (Leonard) Sosnoski and William (Leticia) Mattson. Sisters-in-law Judith (Raymond) DeVries and Charlotte (Melvin) Zegers. Many nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, David, and her parents Richard and Thelma Mattson.

A celebration of life service for Karen will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 22, 2024, at Cornerstone Church, 3440 178th St, Lansing, IL. Friends may visit with the family from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service.
