Obituary: Harry Witvoet

August 6, 1929 – June 5, 2023

Harry Witvoet Harry Witvoet, age 93, of South Holland, IL passed away Monday, June 5, 2023. Beloved husband of the late Sharon Witvoet, nee Zarth. Special and loving friend of Joan Michalski. Devoted father of Dean (Laura) Witvoet, Deanne (Tony) Bruen, Shary (Jim) Leonard, and Layna (Andrew) Van Ermen. Loving grandfather of Chandra (Ray), Justin, Jason, Rick, Samantha, Amber (Joe), Brendan, Briana, Skylar, Jake, Rachel, and Tanner, and great-grandfather of eight. Dear brother of Gerald (Joan) Witvoet and Ilene (Art) Jansma. Preceded in death by his step-son Jon (Judy) Rietveld; his parents Gerrit and Irene Witvoet; his three siblings and their spouses John (Ann Marie) Witvoet, Frank (Maradeen) Witvoet, and Melrose (Lloyd) Schoon; and his son-in-law David Besser.

Harry was the founder and owner of Witvoet Plumbing in South Holland which he started in 1955. He was a U.S. Army Korean War Veteran. His dedication to his neighborhood and community was obvious by the many local organizations he served.

He was a member of the South Holland Lions Club for 60 years where he served in many capacities including Past President, Club Photographer, and Health Equipment Committee Chair delivering to residents in need. He was a part of the Boy Scouts Troop #324. Harry was a longtime member of the United Presbyterian Church in South Holland where he served as an elder and on the Building and Grounds Committee. He was also involved with the Toastmasters as Treasurer and Publicity and Administrative VP. His other hobbies and interests included bowling, gardening, fitness, and golfing.

Harry was one of a kind. He will be remembered for his strength, humor, kindness, and generosity. He was always there to help someone in need and would come running at a moment’s notice to aid his family or anyone else in his community.

Visitation Friday, June 9, 2023, from 3 – 8 p.m. at the Smits, DeYoung-Vroegh Funeral Home, 649 E. 162nd Street, South Holland, IL. A visitation will also be held on Saturday, June 10, 2023, from 10 until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 651 E. 166th Street, South Holland, IL. Interment Oakland Memory Lanes – Dolton, IL. Memorial contributions may be given to Alzheimer’s Association or South Holland Lions Club.
