obituary John Kapteyn

John Kapteyn, age 89, went home to his Lord and Savior peacefully from his home in Lansing, Illinois, on Tuesday, May 30, 2023. Beloved husband of 67 years to Carol, who preceded him in death 17 days earlier. Loving father to Terry (Cheryl) Kapteyn, Scott (Julie) Kapteyn, Diane (Don) Togtman. Proud grandfather to Eric (Kay) Kapteyn, Kelly (Shawn) Evers, Jaclyn (Patrick) Lenehan, Michelle (Dan) Svendsen, Katie (Curt) DeGraff, Wade (Jenni) Kapteyn, Braden (Natalie) Kapteyn, Mike (Hannah) Togtman, Brooke Togtman, and 31 beloved great-grandchildren.

John was born to Peter and Henrietta Kapteyn on November 2, 1933. He had one sister, late Mary (late Jake) Dykema. Loving uncle to many nieces and nephews. John served in the Army during the Korean War. He was the owner/operator of Park Service Station on Torrence and Thornton-Lansing Road before handing it down to his sons and retiring. John was proud to serve the town of Lansing as a volunteer fireman for many years. One of John’s passions during retirement was serving on the boards and volunteering at Harvest Thrift Store/New 2 You, Cedar Lake Ministries, local Christian schools, and Emmanuel Christian Reformed Church. John also had a deep love of Jesus that he shared with others, leading Bible Study at CBMC International and at church. John loved attending his grandchildren’s sporting and school events, tending to his lawn and flowers, and keeping his vehicles sparkling. One of John and Carol’s joys was visiting all 48 lower states on their Harley-Davidson motorcycle over their years of travel.

Friends may visit with the family on Sunday, June 11, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., with a Celebration of Life Service following at 5:00 p.m. Visitation and Service will be held at Emmanuel Christian Reformed Church, 22515 Torrence Avenue, Sauk Village, IL 60411. The service will be Livestreamed at https://www.youtube.com/@emmanuelchristianreformedc8707/streams.

John will be laid to rest at Oak Ridge Cemetery during a private burial. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Emmanuel CRC or a Christian school of your choosing. For more information, please contact Schroeder-Lauer Funeral Home at 1.708.474.0024.
