Obituary: Carol Elizabeth Kapteyn (nee Huizenga)

July 11, 1934 – May 13, 2023

Carol Elizabeth KapteynCarol (Huizenga) Kapteyn, age 88, went home to her Lord and Savior peacefully from her home in Lansing, lllinois on Saturday, May 13, 2023. Beloved wife of 67 years to John Kapteyn. Loving mother to Terry (Cheryl) Kapteyn, Scott (Julie) Kapteyn, Diane (Don) Togtman. Proud grandmother to Eric (Kay) Kapteyn, Kelly (Shawn) Evers, Jaclyn (Patrick) Lenehan, Michelle (Dan) Svendsen, Katie (Curt) DeGraff, Wade (Jenni) Kapteyn, Braden (Natalie) Kapteyn, Mike (Hannah) Togtman, Brooke Togtman, and 31 beloved great-grandchildren.

Carol lived out her faith in Jesus Christ by diligently serving her husband and family through her homemaking, cooking, steadfast love, and prayers. She also lived out her faith by leading women’s Coffee Break Bible Study for more than 30 years. lt was her privilege to lead Bible Study at Lake County Jail for years and was lovingly known as “Grandma Carol.” She was a faithful, hardworking member of Emmanuel Christian Reformed Church in Sauk Village and a substitute teacher at llliana Christian High School. John and Carol enjoyed traveling, especially on their Harley Davidson across the country with friends. One of her favorite hobbies was walking in the pool and building friendships with people at the Eisenhower Fitness Center.

Carol was born to John and Gertrude Huizenga on July 11, 1934. She was the youngest of eight siblings; late Bart (Tina) Huizenga, late Jerry (Audrey) Huizenga, late Nick (Joanne) Huizenga, Anna Mae (late Milt) VanDrunen, Kathryn (late Dave) Rottenberg, late Jim (Marian) Huizenga, and Joey (late Harvey) Vredeveld.

Friends may visit with the family on Thursday, May 18 from 4 to 6 p.m. with the Celebration of Life Service following at 6 p.m. Visitation and Service will be held at Emmanuel Christian Reformed Church, 22515 Torrence Avenue, Sauk Village lL 60411. ln lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Emmanuel CRC or a Christian school of your choosing.
