Safe medication disposal now available at LPD

LANSING, Ill. (March 21, 2023) – The Lansing Police Department now has a permanent receptacle for local residents to safely dispose of unused prescription and over-the-counter medication.

Located in near the front door of the lobby of the Lansing Police Department at 2710 170th Street , the bright green receptacle can be used for medications in their original packaging or in a sealed bag. Inhalers and liquid medication is also accepted. Items not accepted include vitamins, supplements, medical devices, sharps, animal medication, and illicit drugs.

“The disposal of unused prescription drugs can prevent their misuse or accidental overdoses,” said Lansing Deputy Chief Steve Roberts. “This program is funded by the pharmaceutical companies to safely dispose of old and unused medications, preventing them from ending up either flushed into the water system or in landfills.”

According to the FDA, keeping unused drugs can pose a serious safety hazard — especially to young children. Flushing some drugs can also have a negative effect on the environment.
