Freedom Church to host post-pandemic Girl Scout troop rebuilding event

Sunday, March 26, 1:30 p.m. is “Girl Scout for a Day” event

LANSING, Ill. (March 20, 2023) – “I am passionate about my work with my own Girl Scout troop as well as community partnerships,” wrote Kairis Stanton via email. As a leader in Girl Scouts (Troop 65756 in Lansing), she is helping to organize an event designed to reignite Girl Scout troops throughout the area.

“The time has come to jump into action and rebuild our troops that service our girls in areas severely impacted by the pandemic,” Stanton wrote. Stanton has experience in rebuilding. She launched a Lansing troop in January 2022 and grew it from four members to 28 within the year.

Stanton says she realized during that experience that Girl Scouts was doing good things not only for the girls, but also for the parents involved. “I wanted to bring more parents in to share in this experience,” she said.

Stanton is now a part-time recruiter for the council, and in that role she is helping to organize the Girl Scout for a Day event on Sunday, March 26, at 1:30 p.m.

The free event will take place in the gym at Freedom Church in Lansing (2261 Indiana Avenue). Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana are working to create an experience that will give girls and adults a sense of what it means to be a Girl Scout. Attendees will get an inside look at what a Girl Scout meeting is like. They will explore the activities and opportunities open to today’s Girl Scouts.

Also, adults

Stanton is also hopeful that adults who attend will become troop leaders. “Thanks to the support and leadership of caring adults who receive training and support along the way,” says the event website, “girls learn new skills and learn more about the world around them.” Questions about troop leader qualifications and time commitment will be answered at the event.

Stanton specifically wants to reach families in Lansing, Calumet City, Chicago Heights, Dolton, Riverdale, South Holland, and Thornton. No obligation is attached to attendance, but girls and adults will have opportunities to join as members during the event. Stanton and others will help match new scouts with troops that are geographically close to them.

Current Girl Scouts are encouraged to bring interested friends with them.
