LANSING, Ill. (March 6, 2023) – The first class of the upcoming Citizen’s Police Academy will begin on March 22. A Lansing Police Department tradition, the 10-week class will meet on Wednesday nights at 7 p.m. from March 22 – May 17.

Sergeant Dana Tatgenhorst — the LPD officer organizing the program — said, “[The Citizen’s Police Academy] gives Lansing residents the idea of what police work is like without actually going to the police academy and being a sworn officer. Residents are able to see all of our different programs and services that the police department has to offer, and to see [that] it is not like everyone thinks it is on television.”

Participants will receive a tour of the LPD facility, and learn about topics such as traffic stops, 911 emergency response, crime scene investigation, search and seizure, arrest procedure, and others.

Various officers will come in to instruct the class, and participants will witness special demonstrations involving the K-9 unit, use of force, and the department’s new virtual reality scenario simulator.

Apply for Citizen’s Police Academy

The class is open to Lansing residents that are at least 18 years old. Applications are available on the department’s website.

The Lansing Police Department is located at 2710 170th Street.
