Improving our game

Welcome Mike Clark to the Sports beat

LANSING, Ill. (January 2, 2023) – One of our most-often requested categories of coverage is Sports, and we have worked hard to cover the 23 sports TF South offers in 3 different seasons, as well as notable athletics from other local high schools, grade schools, churches, and miscellaneous groups.

In the past year and a half, Managing Editor Josh Bootsma made big strides in improving the sports coverage we were able to provide. But it was a lot to add to his already-full plate.

So Josh and I were both delighted when veteran sports writer Mike Clark reached out to The Lansing Journal. If you subscribe to the NWI Times or the Chicago Sun Times as well as The Lansing Journal, you may be familiar with Mike Clark’s byline. He has been covering sports in our region for more than four decades.

For The Lansing Journal, Clark will file sports stories at least once a week, and maybe two or three times per week. He’ll focus on TF South and TF North, but also cover Marian Catholic and Illiana because of the Lansing connections at those high schools. His first article for The Lansing Journal was published on Christmas Eve: “Last-second three adds another win for TFS Boys Basketball – others scores from local schools.” Since then he has added two more articles, and he is working on others.

When Josh and I interviewed Mike, we were excited about how quickly he would fit into our rhythm of publishing and how much he would help us improve in a much-needed area of coverage. Mike brings an obvious professionalism, vast experience, and a broad network of coaches and athletic directors he has built relationships with. We are thrilled to have him on the team.
