Marilyn Jean (Paarlberg) DeYoung of Menomonee Falls, WI, formerly of South Holland, IL, passed away on December 25, 2022. She was 90 years old. She was born in Lansing Illinois to James and Edith Paarlberg in 1932. Marilyn lived nearly all her life in South Holland, Illinois and was a lifelong member of the First Reformed Church of South Holland. She graduated from Thornton Township High school in 1950 and literally married the boy across the street, Harris “Skip” DeYoung two years later. The couple recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Marilyn showed she was truly a farmer’s daughter with her love of gardening. She also enjoyed baking, antiques and was an accomplished furniture refinisher. She worked for many years in the office at George R. Gibson Chevrolet in South Holland and was known for her constant volunteer work at church, particularly her involvement in the choir. A good work ethic was an expected trait for all of her children. Her family however, will best remember her for being a stereotypical mom and grandma, trying her best to fill up four boys at mealtimes and baking special treats around the holidays. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Harris, and a brother Conrad Paarlberg.
She is survived by her four sons, David (Barb) DeYoung of Waukesha, WI, Dan (Julie) DeYoung of Evansville, IN, Paul (Debbie) DeYoung of South Holland, IL, Thomas (Brenda) DeYoung of Lowell, IN, 13 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.
Visitation with family and friends will be held on Monday, January 2, 2023, from 4 – 7 p.m. at Smits, DeYoung-Vroegh Funeral Home, 649 E. 162nd Street, South Holland, IL and on Tuesday, January 3, 2023, from 10 – 11 a.m. at First Reformed Church, 15924 South Park Avenue, South Holland, IL.
