Avila family needs to raise $5,000 more for Teci’s treatment — Garage sale this weekend

By Josh Bootsma

LANSING, Ill. (September 8, 2022) – Same as last weekend, purchases made at the garage sale at 3112 190th Street this weekend will help the Avila family bring their daughter Teresa “Teci” Avila to both Texas and Arizona in the coming months for medical treatment.

Elizabeth and Guillermo Avila have hosted many garage sales, Facebook campaigns, and other fundraisers in recent years to help raise money for their daughter Teci’s extensive and expensive medical needs.

When she was three, Teci (pronounced “Tessie”) choked while eating a grape and was unresponsive for 19 minutes before Lansing paramedics were able to restore her heartbeat. The miracle revival left her paralyzed and unable to speak. In the years since, her condition has improved through the use of different types of therapy, specialized education, and stem cell transplants.

Upcoming expenses

Money raised from the garage sales will go directly to two upcoming trips for the Avila family. The first will be to San Antonio, Texas to the Children’s Rehabilitation Institute TeletonUSA (CRIT), where Teci will undergo an intensive three-week therapy program. The second trip will be to Arizona, where Teci will receive her next stem cell transplant, a treatment that has resulted in improvement in the past.

The family still needs to raise $5,000 for their upcoming travels.

Garage sale dates, hours, address

This weekend’s garage sale will run from Thursday, September 8 – Saturday, September 10. Weather permitting, the sales will run from 9 – 3 p.m. on each day. The sale will take place at 3112 190th Street in Lansing.
