The common milkweed can be found in pollinator gardens throughout Lansing. The sap from the plant is slightly poisonous, but monarch butterflies are immune to it. They feed almost exclusively on milkweed sap, and so accumulate the poison in their bodies, which makes them distasteful to predators. Monarch butterflies are important pollinators in our ecosystem, and they are also a food source for birds, other insects, and even small mammals. (Photo: Melanie Jongsma)
