Lansing Garden Club beautifies LARC campus

LANSING, Ill. (June 24, 2022) – Members of the Lansing Garden Club spent much of Saturday, June 18 improving the grounds of LARC, a Lansing organization that serves intellectually and developmentally disabled individuals.

The Lansing Garden Club is a volunteer organization that takes on gardening-related projects in Lansing with a focus on native plant species and pollinator plants. Two Saturdays earlier, the group worked on improving the area around the sign at Volunteers Park in Lansing.

Their June 18 project was a larger one, as the group added plants and mulch to an outdoor area at LARC.

Lansing Garden Club founder Diane Lund said she provided the schematic for the planting project, while LARC paid for the plants. LGC members, as well as LARC Director Jeff Gajewski and CEO Ernie Gonzales, planted the new garden.

“The garden includes 34 mostly native species plants, 18 native species bushes, and one native species tree. The flowering plants chosen will overlap with blooms available all season for our pollinators, making this a pollinator garden,” Lund said.

Some of the plants included in the project are Elderberry – Lemon Lace, Bee Balm, Red Hot Poker, Coral Bells, and Dwarf Magic Carpet Spirea. The area was covered with mulch after the plants were planted.
