Lansing Heat Advisory went into effect 3:45 a.m. Tuesday

LANSING, Ill. (June 14, 2022) – Already on Monday temperatures in Lansing reached 94 degrees, and conditions were right for a Tornado Watch by 5:50 p.m., which turned into a Tornado Warning just before 7 p.m. The warning subsided before 8 p.m., but heat and humidity continued overnight. A Heat Advisory that had originally warned people to take caution from Tuesday noon through 8 p.m. Wednesday was adjusted to begin at 3:45 a.m. Tuesday. Lansing temps reached 79 degrees before 7 a.m., and the humidity was already above 70%.

In anticipation of abnormally high temperatures and humidity throughout the state this week, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) published these heat-related preparedness tips:

  • Heed all heat watches, warnings, and advisories shared by local emergency management agencies
  • Keep hydrated. Avoid alcohol and caffeinated beverages as their diuretic properties actually remove fluids from the body.
  • Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and stay out of the sun when possible.
  • Avoid strenuous activities.
  • Check on neighbors, particularly older residents.
  • Monitor updates provided by the National Weather Service.
