John L. Byerly Sr., age 91, of Dyer, IN, formerly of Riverdale, IL passed away peacefully at home on Friday, April 22, 2022. Devoted husband of the late Jean M Byerly, nee Cunningham. Loving father of John L. Byerly Jr., James R. (Donna) Byerly, Barbara J. McNeely, Mark D. Byerly, Ann Therese Hyzy, and Jacqueline Byerly. Beloved grandfather of Colin Byerly, Jessica Pulliam, Brad Smith, Todd Smith, Benjamin Byerly, Brandon Hyzy, Matthew Byerly, the late Rebekah Byerly, Thomas McNeely, Alexis Hyzy and great-grandfather of Augustus, Kiera, Blake, and Scarlett. Dear brother of the late James (late Laverne) Byerly, Jeanne (Robert) Moeller, Joan (Thomas) Linnane, and Jerry (late Rosemary) Byerly. Also preceded in death by his parents James Benjamin and Margaret Mary Byerly.
Mr. Byerly was a U.S. Navy Veteran. He retired from Illinois Bell after 37 years with perfect attendance. He was an outstanding family man and very active in the Riverdale community. He was loved by many and will be deeply missed.
A memorial visitation with family and friends will be held on Saturday, May 7, 2022, from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. at Smits Funeral Home, 2121 Pleasant Springs Lane, Dyer, IN. A family interment will take place at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, IL on Monday, May 9, 2022.
