January 12 and 19 food drives will have double the normal amount of food

LANSING, Ill. (January 11, 2022) – Mt. Zion Ministries will give away twice the food it usually does on upcoming Wednesdays, as the church and organization seeks to meet the needs of a community that has been without Walmart since Friday night.
“This whole Walmart thing is horrible,” said Betty Burley of Mt. Zion Ministries, referring to an intentionally-set fire in the Lansing store on Friday that has kept it closed. It is still unclear when Walmart will reopen.
10 a.m. and noon
Burley said as a result of the closure, Mt. Zion — located a short distance from Walmart — will double its food giveaways on both Wednesday, January 12 and Wednesday, January 19. Interested recipients can receive food during the first giveaway which starts at 10 a.m. and come through the line again when the second giveaway starts at 12 noon.
Burley said Mt. Zion is expecting 24 pallets of food on the upcoming Wednesdays, which will include refrigerated food and other items provided by Illinois Partners in Hope.
“So many people have called, asking for food,” Burley said.
Mt. Zion regularly hosts food drives on Wednesdays, and also hosts a 24-hour micro pantry on its property for anyone in need.
Mt. Zion Ministries is located at 2340 177th Street in Lansing.
