Classes online, extracurriculars suspended until after MLK Day

LANSING, Ill. (January 4, 2021) – On Monday, District 215 announced it would be transitioning to remote learning starting on Tuesday, January 4. The current date planned to return to in-person learning is Tuesday, January 18, after the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
District 215, which includes TF South High School in Lansing, cited a “recent spike in COVID-19 cases in our school communities” as the reason for the transition to remote learning, adding that COVID-19 cases within the district have caused staffing shortages.
“We believe this decision is only a temporary disruption to in-person learning,” District 215 Superintendent Dr. Sophia Jones-Redmond said in a statement on the District’s website.

The district has said remote learning will occur according to the emergency e-learning plan, which can be accessed on the District 215 website. The emergency procedures include synchronous instruction with teachers.
The decision will result in the suspension of all extracurricular activities, including sports, clubs, and other activities. Jones-Redmond said, “We understand the impact this stoppage will have on our student athletes and club members; however, in an effort to promote the safety and well-being of all students and staff we believe this additional measure is needed at this time.”
The remote learning period will shorten classes to 40 minutes. The class schedule is included below:
- Period 0 — 7:40 – 8:20 a.m.
- Period 1 — 8:25 – 9:05 a.m.
- Period 2 — 9:10 – 9:55 a.m.
- Period 3 — 10 – 10:40 a.m.
- Period 4 — 10:45 – 11:25 a.m.
- Period 5 — 11:30 – 12:10 p.m.
- Period 6 — 12:15 – 12:55 p.m.
- Period 7 — 1:00 – 1:40 p.m.
- 2 – 3:15 p.m. – Teacher Self-Guided Planning/Availability for Students: Each teacher will send a Zoom link to student email to log into their virtual classroom.
“Student attendance is mandatory and teachers will take attendance every period. If a student is ill, parents must still report the absence using the attendance line for each respective campus,” Jones-Redmond said.
Student meal services of breakfast and lunch will we offered as a grab-and-go at TF South, North, and Center for all D215 students from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Monday through Friday. Students should bring their school ID or be prepared to provide their name to pick up meals. Students requiring delivery service can make a request at [email protected].
