Taco Bell seeks drive thru special use for future location on Torrence

By Josh Bootsma

LANSING, Ill. (December 10, 2021) – Taco Bell is eyeing a location on Torrence Avenue, and came before the Village Board Tuesday to formally request a special use for a drive-thru. The proposal is the latest of many planned developments to come before the Village Board in recent months.

Two men representing the future development came before the Village Board on Tuesday, December 7 and shared some of the details of the proposed fast food restaurant.

Located at 17943 Torrence Avenue — immediately north of the proposed Starbucks that the Village Board approved a drive-thru special use for in September — the location will include two drive-thru lanes, be finished with a brick veneer and metal paneling, and with have fencing along the back alley. An outdoor dining area is planned as well. The Taco Bell parking lot will be accessible off of Torrence Avenue, and it is planned to connect to the future Starbucks lot to the south.

Representatives for the proposed development said the location currently plans to close its lobby at 11 p.m., with the drive-thru staying open until 1 a.m.

Village Administrator Dan Podgorski and Trustee Micaela Smith both inquired regarding a Taco Bell Cantina, a special designation that includes a more upscale design and serves alcohol. The Taco Bell representatives said their location will not be a Taco Bell Cantina.

The Village Board will vote to approve the drive-thru special use during its next meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, December 21.

  1. I know that Lansing could use the tax dollars, but I would rather see something else go in that area on Torrence. Having visited many of the Taco Bell’s in the area, and usually at various times at night, lots of them with the drive-thru open at night get very, very busy at times and have lines out the drive thru area. I have also noticed this with other fast food facilities in the area. Lansing Popeye’s, Burger King, McDonalds and Johnny K’s had all had drive thru lines out to the street on Torrence. Burger King had it out to Ridge Road. That was all on one Saturday evening about two months ago. We don’t need more of this and then have traffic issues on our biggest main street. Besides, I would rather see something independent and family owned from someone local. We are losing to many of these small businesses in our community.
