GLENWOOD, Ill. (November 16, 2021) — Approximately 25 students who completed a Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) course over the summer were recently acknowledged at a STEM Program Completion Recognition Event at Glenwood Academy. The summer program was taught by faculty from Mentoring Youth Through Technology (MYTT), and was made possible through funding provided by Comcast.

For 12 weeks, a group of students in fifth through eighth grades were provided hands-on training and instruction in building and programming Lego Mindstorm robots. Students worked in small groups to design robotic systems, learning the coding language necessary to enable robots to move and respond to commands. Using the skills they acquired, students also participated in a number of robotic challenges in competitions with classmates.

“We are thrilled that our students had the opportunity to experience this amazing STEM course offered by MYTT over the summer,” said Mary Hollie, President and Chief Executive Officer at Glenwood Academy. “Through this course, they were able to not only express their creativity, but they also developed coding skills, enhanced problem solving, and learned necessary tools to work collaboratively with others as a team. We thank Comcast for their support in funding this program, and MYTT for teaching such an invaluable course that was educational, challenging, and fun for our students.”

MYTT presented each of the students that completed the program a new Dell laptop. The laptops were donated by Comcast, which has been working to close the digital divide and promote digital equity in the south suburbs and across the nation for more than a decade.

“Comcast recognizes the crucial role Internet connectivity and technology play in students’ ability to succeed in school and later in life,” said Yohan Fernando, Senior Manager of Government and Regulatory Affairs at Comcast. “We were honored to provide computers to the students participating in the Academy’s STEM program and are proud to be part of the MYTT family and its journey to inspire, educate and mentor youth using technology.”

Glenwood Academy is located at 500 West 187th Street in Glenwood.
