TF South returns to the stage with The Addams Family, The Musical

By Noah Johnson

LANSING, Ill. (November 4, 2021) – The TF South drama department is slated to put on its first show since 2019 next week.

The department will perform The Addams Family, The Musical on November 12, 13 and 14. Ann Wolpert, director of the department, describes the show as “the silliest thing you’ve ever seen,” noting the energy at the performance will be “off the charts.”

“If you’ve ever watched the Addams Family, the live version or the cartoon vision, [this performance will be] that times 10,” Wolpert said. “What you think is going to happen doesn’t. It’s one of those.”

TF South back onstage

She is most looking forward to seeing the kids back on the stage after a months-long hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“These shows bring energy to the place and help the kids surprise themselves and their friends when they do this kind of thing, like ‘wow you can sing’ or ‘wow you can dance’ and they had no idea,” she said. “So they get to share some talents. And you find kids who have talents for other things like a girl in my class who is great with wigs. She’s been helping me get all the wigs ready for the show.”

The department had to shift to virtual productions amid the pandemic. One of those productions that took place last fall was She Kills Monsters. The group also competed in a virtual competition, where performers got good feedback from the judges, Wolpert said.

Things may still feel strange since masks will be required for the performers this time around, Wolpert explained. Performers will also be encouraged to not only bring their own makeup kits, but to apply their own makeup as a COVID-19 precaution.

Nonetheless, everyone working on the production is excited, a sentiment echoed by TF South senior David Taylor, who is cast as the father of the Addams Family. This will be his first TF South performance.

“I’m excited to see how everything comes together and the experience it’s going to be; I’m excited to see the hard work we put in and what the outcome is,” Taylor said.

Tickets for The Addams Family, The Musical are available at the door. Performances will take place in the TF South Auditorium on November 12, 13, and 14 at 7 p.m. as well as a matinee that will occur on Saturday, November 13 at 2 p.m. TF South is located at 18500 Burnham Avenue in Lansing.
