Three arrested after crashing stolen vehicle on Burnham Avenue

By Josh Bootsma

LANSING, Ill. (September 7, 2021) — The Lansing Police Department arrested three individuals Tuesday afternoon after a stolen vehicle was crashed into three utility poles near the intersection of Burnham Avenue and Adams Street.

Detective Sergeant Mike Lazowski said LPD had pulled over the “suspicious vehicle” on Burnham — south of Ridge Road — prior to the vehicle crash. The driver and passengers fled north on Burnham after being stopped. After traveling over the Pennsy Greenway, the vehicle crashed into three different utility and light poles on the east side of the street, near the Family Dollar located at 17829 Burnham Avenue.

Lazowski confirmed the white Chrysler sedan had been stolen.

After the crash, which severely damaged the vehicle, the driver and two passengers fled the wreck on foot. According to Lazowski, two individuals fled in one direction, and the third individual fled in another direction. All three were apprehended by LPD on foot and arrested.

Lazowski said charges are pending investigation. He also said information regarding injuries of the three individuals was not yet available when speaking with The Lansing Journal Tuesday evening. He said an LPD officer sustained minor injuries during the apprehension.

Within an hour of the crash, the wrecked vehicle had been removed from the scene and Lansing Public Works and ComEd were working to make repairs to the area.

An employee at Ace Pizza — immediately south of Family Dollar and near the downed utility poles — said he heard the crash clearly from inside the small pizzeria. He said Ace Pizza employees and the storefront were unharmed by the incident and falling utility poles.

An employee at Family Dollar also said he heard the crash and had seen individuals running from the wrecked vehicle. The Family Dollar building appeared to be unscathed by the incident.

Lazowski said that — to his knowledge — no one else was injured as a result of the car chase and subsequent crash.

The Lansing Police Department is located at 2710 170th Street, Lansing, IL

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story indicated that the LPD were “in pursuit” of the stolen vehicle as it traveled north on Burnham. According to Police Chief Al Phillips, the LPD was not actively pursuing the vehicle at the time of the crash, but did quickly respond to the scene after the crash. The story has been updated to reflect this information.
