SOUTH HOLLAND, Ill. (April 22, 2021) – During Earth Month, South Suburban College is pleased to announce its 2020 Tree Campus USA recognition. Tree Campus USA, an Arbor Day Foundation program, honors colleges and universities and their leaders for promoting healthy trees and engaging students and staff in the spirit of conservation. SSC was one of 19 Illinois campuses selected to receive the award.

In a statement from Arbor Day Foundation, “To obtain this distinction, SSC met the five core standards for sustainable campus forestry required by Tree Campus USA, including establishment of a tree advisory committee, evidence of a campus tree-care plan, dedicated annual expenditures for its campus tree program, an Arbor Day observance, and the sponsorship of student service-learning projects. Your entire campus community should be proud of this sustained commitment to environmental stewardship.”

Earth Day (April 22, 2021) is a good time to consider the importance of trees. Communities worldwide are facing issues with air quality, water resources, personal health and well-being, and energy use. SSC and its Sustainability Committee continue to work to do its part, now in its third year of Tree Campus recognition.

The SSC Sustainability Committee was established in 2011 to coordinate SSC’s efforts in sustainability leadership within its community. Its number one goal is to educate staff and students about how to practice environmental stewardship at home and in the community. Additionally, the SSC Green Club is a student organization that works collaboratively with the college on its ongoing sustainability efforts an initiatives. Students interested in participating should email [email protected] for more information.
