Window closing for TF South seniors to apply for scholarships

By Josh Bootsma

LANSING, Ill. (March 3, 2021) – The deadline for TF South seniors to apply for local scholarships is Friday, March 5, though a few days of grace will be granted.

According to TF South Administrative Assistant Nicole Moore, TF South seniors should access their Naviance accounts to see which scholarships may match their future plans. Naviance is a software tool that helps high school students plan and prepare for college. The scholarship search on Naviance includes both national and local scholarships, Moore said.

“Our local lists are very important to the school because it includes alumni committees who have formed a scholarship for our school only,” Moore said.

The local scholarships, according to Moore, range between $500–$1,000 while the national scholarships range between $500–$10,000.

Local TF South scholarships

The descriptions for the scholarships below were provided.

Curtis Granderson UIC Scholarship

This Scholarship was established by Curtis Granderson, Jr. (CJ) to give assistance to a current TF South student who has applied to and been accepted at the University of Illinois Chicago. Curtis values his college education as one of his most important assets. His parents instilled in him the important value of an education and establishing this scholarship for a graduate from his high school is his way of sharing that value with others.

Mike Holba Family Scholarship

This scholarship program was established by the Holba family as a way to give back to current TF South Student-Athletes who demonstrate good character and leadership both in the classroom and on the athletic field of play.

Mark DeVries Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship program was established by the widow and son of Mark DeVries as a way to honor Mark, who exemplified the “all-around nice guy” on campus. Mark demonstrated good character, strong leadership, athleticism, citizenship, friendship, and commitment to academics and community. Mark was a 1982 graduate of TF South High School and was involved in choir, drama, National Honor Society, football, and basketball.

Patti Leach Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship program is created as a perpetual memorial to Patti Leach, who served as a Physical Education teacher in Lansing School District 158 from 1968 to 2005. In addition to a distinguished teaching career, Miss Leach was a 21-year member of the Lan-Oak Park District Board of Commissioners, served as a Village of Lansing Trustee for eight years, and as a Lansing School District 158 board member for one year.

Carol Smith Scholarship

This scholarship program was established by the family of Carol Smith. Adopted as an infant, Mrs. Smith was raised on School Street by William and Sylvia VanRamshorst. A ’56 graduate of Thornton Fractional, (before there was a South), Mrs. Smith and her husband, Ron, raised four boys, Doug (Class of ’81), Dave (Class of ’83), Greg (Class of ’85), and Chris (Class of ’90) on 180th Street.

TF South is located at 18500 Burnham Avenue, Lansing, IL
