LANSING, Ill. (January 22, 2021) – Thornton Fractional District 215 announced yesterday that students will soon be able to participate in approved winter sports. With Region 10 moving from Tier 3 to Tier 2 COVID-19 mitigations, District 215 is utilizing
Illinois Department of Public Health guidelines and Illinois High School Association (IHSA)
recommendations in planning for the return to athletics.

District 215 student participation in sports will proceed in the two phases noted below.

Phase 1: Winter sports

Phase 1 will allow students begin practices and competitions for low-risk winter sports. Approximate start dates are:

  • Boys’ Swimming – February 1st
  • Cheerleading – January 28th
  • Dance – February 1st
  • Boys’ Bowling – February 1st
  • Girls’ Bowling – February 1st

Phase 2: Higher risk sports and out-of-season sports

Basketball is a winter sport considered high risk and more information on participation will be conveyed to students and families soon.

Marc Brewe, athletic director at Thornton Fractional South High School, noted that students are required to have a valid sports physical on file as well as have registered on prior to the first day of participation. Student-athletes interested in participating will reach out to their respective coaches for more information and details.

Dr. Sophia Jones-Redmond, superintendent of Thornton Fractional District 215 said, “We are so thrilled to welcome our student-athletes back and excited to support their participation in the sports they love.”
