Note: The Lansing Journal covered the June 13 peaceful protest in Lansing, which involved several speeches under the Clock Tower. That article is posted here, and we invited the speakers to submit their speeches to our “Lansing Voices” feature.
Look around and observe those in front, behind, to the left, right, and those that surround you. Everyone of us has a circle of influence. Every single one.
And it’s the purpose of every single one of us to figure out how we can impact those circles.
Many of us as we marched, we held up our fist. And I need you to understand something about holding up your fist in your individual circle of influence. Because every single one of us is like a body part, we’re like a finger on a hand. And if every single one of us realizes that by ourselves we can do some things. But when we unify and come together, it’s a heck of a task to pull us apart! Each finger represents black America and its allies. We need to stop being separated and take a unified stand, so the world will know that we value black lives and the future of black people is important in this country.
Today we find ourselves together, unified over a matter of human lives. We are so much stronger together! Protests in all 50 states and many countries around the globe are united together for the sake of humanity. God’s most valued creation is mankind, and if he cared enough to breathe his breath inside of us, then no one has the right to take it away!
There are many good people around the world. People with good thoughts and people with compassionate hearts, and it is that heart of compassion that will change the habits of our land. Our collective love for humanity will reign victorious, and we won’t be silenced until it has!
People of Lansing, neighbors, friends, educators and officials and law enforcement, there is no reason that we can’t be the change the country needs. Instead of waiting for the world to respond, let’s make a commitment to be the example and illustrate for the world what it means to be one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
