SOUTH HOLLAND, Ill. (April 22, 2020) – In honor of Earth Awareness Day, South Suburban College (SSC) announced its 2019 Tree Campus USA® recognition. Tree Campus USA, an Arbor Day Foundation program, honors colleges and universities and their leaders for promoting healthy trees and engaging students and staff in the spirit of conservation. SSC was one of just 20 schools in Illinois to be recognized at the time of the award notification.
A statement from Arbor Day Foundation explained that to obtain this distinction, “SSC met the five core standards for sustainable campus forestry required by Tree Campus USA, including establishment of a tree advisory committee, evidence of a campus tree-care plan, dedicated annual expenditures for its campus tree program, an Arbor Day observance, and the sponsorship of student service-learning projects. Your entire campus community should be proud of this sustained commitment to environmental stewardship.”
The SSC Sustainability Committee was established in 2011 to coordinate SSC’s efforts in sustainability leadership within the community. Its number one goal is to educate staff and students about how to practice environmental stewardship at home and in the community.
SSC’s Main Campus has a diverse range of beautiful tree and plant species. The Main Campus is located at 15800 South State Street, South Holland, Illinois. Visit ssc.edu for more information.
