MATTESON, Ill. (April 8, 2020) – On Tuesday morning, Congresswoman Robin Kelly hosted a telephone conference call with faith leaders from the 2nd Congressional District. This call was the fifth in her series focused on explaining the COVID-19 response legislation and soliciting ideas for additional federal response measures.

“Congregations are already working hard to provide services and resources to our community during this challenging time, and we’re deeply grateful to them for their ongoing work,” Congresswoman Kelly said. “The purpose of the call was to hear what they needed, how can we help, and what can be done to support our nation’s most vulnerable at this time of crisis.”

During the call, Congresswoman Kelly shared information about the first three COVID19 response bills and discussed how certain church operations may qualify for federal assistance.

“I want to express my sincere appreciation to Congresswoman Kelly for updating the clergy in her district and providing us with direct information,” said Pastor Scott Onque of St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church in Chicago. “Rep. Kelly was able to address questions regarding the stimulus checks and the need for more funding in future legislation for our safety net hospitals in the Chicago Southland.”

At the end of the call, Congresswoman Kelly thanked the faith leaders for continuing to take care of the most vulnerable in our communities. She also asked that churches practice social distancing. Rep. Kelly concluded by thanking all those who are putting themselves at risk so we can continue to move forward. “I want to send out prayers to our health care workers and to all our essential workers—truckers, postal workers, clerks and cashiers in grocery stores, and other businesses remaining open,” she said.

Congresswoman Kelly will host calls with Second District elected officials on Wednesday, April 8, first responders on Thursday, April 9, and farmers and agricultural workers on Tuesday, April 14.
